Risk can be assessed using the acronyms LITE or TILE which stands for Load, Individual, Task, Environment. LOAD – You are assessing the size, weight, shape of the load. INDIVIDUAL – is the individual doing the task physically able to do it? Are they trained and competent, and are they confident that they can do it? Will they need assistance from another person? TASK – look at the task that has to be done. Is there any equipment that can be used to reduce the risk of injury, such as a trolley? ENVIRONMENT – look at the environment. How far has the load moved? Are there any stairs that need to be negotiated? Is there a lift? Are there any closed doors that need to be held open? When a task cannot be avoided, then the risk of injury has to be reduced as far as possible.
