I was born into this hell they call life. All I did was stand up for myself and now I'm sitting in prison cell. That was 10 years ago, now on the eve of the winter solstice I'm planning my escape. I looked across the cell at Jay, who had been in there with me for 8 years. His normally dull blue eyes, had a sapphire sparkle as he thought of what was coming. A clang sounded down the hall and I saw his muscles tense. He nodded and we sprung into action. In the cells surrounding ours, prisoners were grabbing what they could and diving into the escape tunnels they had dug, during the hard hours of labor. "Christina. I want you to take Alice with you and run. You're the fastest one. If you make it out, keep her safe." "But..." "Please. I may not make it. i don't want her to die as well." I could hear the desperation in his voice. This was his final request. "Alright." "Thank you." I watched the shadows of the other prisoners climbing out of the ground and running for it. With no trees or buildings to hide behind, we only had a slim chance of survival. I looked back to see the guards raising their guns. The gunshots sounded deafening in the cold night. I watched as everyone around me fell, their bodies shattering into millions of tiny fragments. The sound was like that of glass breaking. I whispered a silent farewell to my comrades, as I scooped Alice into my arms and ran for it. I hid her face so she wouldn't see the shattered. The lights of the town beckoned, as we drew on. Just as I set foot in the city, sirens blared. Doors and windows were slammed shut and locked. I made a dash for the cover of the alley, hoping the guards wouldn't search there. Searchlights passed in front of the alley and I hid Alice behind an old box. Alice quivered and I pulled her tight against
