Throughout the story of Antigone many different lessons can be taken away such as the importance of being true to yourself as well as not being afraid to do what you know is right. Antigone is very loyal to the gods, while Ismene is loyal to the king. This clash of personalities is important to the idea of will power because Antigone is not afraid to stand up to the king, while Ismene does not want to get in trouble. Will power is shown by Antigone because she is able to make her own decisions despite what her sister says and even what the law tells her to do. The central theme in this play is will power which is demonstrated through Antigone’s actions of disobedience towards the king. Antigone’s will power can be seen from the very beginning of the play when she talks to her sister Ismene about burying their brother disregarding the king’s law. Towards the middle of the play Antigone is having an argument with the king, her sister Ismene comes and now tries to tell Antigone that she agrees their brother should be buried. Her love for her brother is so strong, that she is willing to sacrifice her life in order to put him at peace. In today’s society the government does not attempt to control what and how we think, however they do want people to think the same way as them. It is common for people to base their thoughts and opinions based on what is the most accepted and not actually based on what their true beliefs are. Antigone is different than the majority because she is able to and will think on her own and not be persuaded to change her mind based off of what the majority
