4. Consider some of the modern themes which exist within the play: Suicide, teenage sexuality, or parent/ child relationships, and gender roles. How have attitudes changed since Shakespeare’s time? How does our society differ today in terms of these themes?
Starting with the topic of suicide, during the Elizabethan Age there were two opposing sides to how suicide was viewed. On one side there was the idea of “mortal sin”, something committed only by people who had despaired God’s mercy. This act was looked upon with ideas of shame, and because of this victims were sometimes demonized and refused normal burial: instead were buried in crossroads as further punishment for those who had lost their path in life. Although the two met only one day before their marriage they loved quickly without hesitation. They are emotions toward each other were extreme from the beginning much like modern day teenage relationships. Friar Lawrence addresses this before he agrees to marry them. “These violent delights have violent ends And in their triumph die, like fire and powder, Which as they kiss, consume. Love doesn't always have to mean the person you spend your life with, it can be people you aren't even attracted to in a romantic way. It can be the person who makes you pizza rolls after a break-up, or the person who deals with your weird and childish quirks, or the person who won’t let you do that group presentation because they know you'll get flustered and embarrassed, maybe it’s the person who stays up all night helping you correct your spelling mistakes, and grammatical errors, and refuses to go to bed until you've finished it all. Love doesn't have to be limited to one person for your whole life. As people get older their ideas of love may change, it could expand or contract for the amount of people who they decide to let in.
