The Tuskegee Airmen are critical to American history because they helped African-Americans get more influential roles in the military. Roosevelt and Truman were stunned from their performance in the war so they decided to pave the way for racial integration after the services the tuskegee airman performed in the war. Before Truman and Roosevelt decided to help deal with racism African-Americans weren’t even allowed to fly planes for the military. The Tuskegee Airmen started off as nothing and ended up being outstanding pilots in war that opened people’s minds to allowing more African-Americans to fly in the military.
The Tuskegee Airmen were the first African-American flying unit in the U.S. military. After a long time of civil rights groups and black leaders, the army finally allowed a small group of African-Americans to train and later become pilots. At this time almost the whole nation was prejudiced and discriminated against African-Americans. This was a lot more intense in the south which is where the U.S. Army had the Tuskegee airmen train. “Black troops found themselves shunted to the bottom of the military's hierarchy, and the armed services continued their practice of segregating whites and blacks”(White).Even though they were discriminated against since day one they didn’t get them to give up on their dreams of being a pilot for the U.S. Army and thank god they didn’t ,because they achieved great success in war. Their main mission in World War Two was to escort bombers. They did such a good job at this that there was a rumor that they never lost a bomber to an enemy. “The squadron was awarded 150 Distinguished Flying Crosses, 744 Air Medals, 14 Bronze Stars, and 8 Purple Hearts”(Benson). They engaging in over 200 bomber escort missions and they also damaged or destroyed over 400 German aircraft.
The Tuskegee Airmen accomplishes amazing success in the military. They were discriminated against throughout the whole process. They didn’t let the racism get in their way of their goal of becoming pilots for the U.S.. Once they became pilots
