Some African Americans were successful in retaining their land and farms; it became difficult in the 1920s and 1930s. The crisis, called the Great Depression, began in the rural south with a severe crisis in agriculture. 150,000 African Americans left Georgia in the decade of the 1920s to escape oppressive conditions like vigilante violence.
