CEI-CMH Task Group Analysis Description The social work student intern’s field placement is in the Families Forward unit of Community Mental Health. This unit focuses on outpatient care and building community connections while also working closely with therapists to build skills in youth consumers. Within this unit, mental health workers called Family Support Workers (FSW) work directly with consumers, providing both respite care and community living supports to consumers as referred by therapists. FSWs have standing monthly staff development meetings, where they are given an opportunity to speak with others in their same role to discuss how to handle certain situations in their caseload, as well as discussing certain aspects of the job. Present at this meeting was the student intern’s supervisor (Tracy), as well as four FSWs (Maddy, Alana, Alex, and Austin). The group began in Tuckman’s ‘forming’ stage of team development (Tuckman, 1965). Participants were introduced to a set of group norms and the shared goal for the group. The participants of this group had relatively dissimilar perspectives in that they had all been in the role for different amounts of time – from multiple years to just a couple of weeks. It appeared to the student worker that the varying levels of experience had the potential to bring many different ideas to the staff development meeting. In addition, three of the FSW participants happened to have had experience with that particular consumer, so they brought valuable first-hand experience to create a positive behavior chart for
