The Rosetta Stone (Egypt), housed in the British Museum, is a very important artifact. The Rosetta Stone was founded in 1799 by French soldiers during Napoleon's Invasion of Egypt during the campaign. The stone is a black basalt slab with three distinct types of writing on it that dates back to King Ptolemy V Epiphanes of Egypt's 196 BCE ruling. The three different writings were, Greek, Demotic, and Hieroglyphics. Many people could read Greek at the time of the stone's discovery; they were not able to decipher the other two. The Rosetta Stone was a crucial component in solving the mystery of ancient Egyptian writing.
