You should never be drawn into a disagreement with a child or young person in school if this does happen you need to seek advice from a senior colleague and deal with the situation appropriately. Disagreements with other adults must always be approached sensitively with the intention of resolving the situation as soon as possible. Most disagreements are usually down to poor communication. The best way to resolve a disagreement is to discuss the cause and find a way forward together. Often parents and schools have different ideas and values about certain situations, its good practice to sit down and discuss your differences and work alongside each other. You need to explain and clarify why things need to happen in a different way in schools. When dealing with disagreements with children, adults or young people you must always:

When gathering information in school from adult, young person or child you should always reassure them that anything discussed will be in confidence and will not be passed on to anybody else. If any information is to be passed on they will be asked to sign a consent form. If reassurance is still needed they should be referred to the schools confidentiality policy. There is some information which does need to be shared with all staff in school for the childâ€TMs own safety, such as medical problems or allergies.
It is important to understand the difference between absolute confidentiality and limited confidentiality. If a child is at risk by confidentiality remaining in place, the information should be disclosed to the relevant parties. If this situation occurs the person who made the disclosure must be informed to whom it is being shared with.
