At birth, people are given a formal name. A formal name typically includes a first, middle, and last name. The last name is used to show connection to a family. Within families and close relationships, nicknames evolve. These names communicate the casual relationship between two people. Henrik Ibsen incorporated this into his work. The “Doll House” uses nicknames to communicate prevalent feelings in relationships, and it shows the indirect, but important effects of Dr. Rank in the play.
The use of nicknames was present throughout the story. Torvald uses them to address his wife Nora. He uses these to show his need and affection for her. He uses casual names of endearment
