On July 4, 1852, Frederick Douglass delivered an empowering speech that affected all Americans but was most impactful on slaves. Douglass makes the audience realize that where at one side America is celebrating its independence, it does not apply to the slaves of America. Douglas told the audience that arguments against slavery are well understood but ignored. What was needed was “fire” not light on the subject; “thunder” not a gentle “shower” of reason. In his speech Frederick Douglas not only exposed the hypocrisy of Americans against the slaves but roused the conscience of the listeners and argues that America’s treatment of the slave is a crime against man and God which must be condemned. He accomplishes this by the use of anaphora, irony,
