Mother and wife of United States diplomat, Abigail Adams, in her letter, to her son John Quincy Adams, guides her son to utilize his advantages. Adam’s purpose is to encourage her son to do better while he is away with his father. She adopts a nurturing tone in order to convince her son to better himself through the use of supportive diction, clear exemplification, and appeals to his vulnerable emotions. Adams begins her letter with the use of supportive diction. Words such as “daily” and “improving” encourages her son to acknowledge the opportunities he has. Knowing she has great influence on him, Adams supports and motivates her son to the best of her ability by making it known to John that he can improve himself no matter what he is doing.
