Her son, Charley, got Cholera, a disease that was spread through dirty water and killed 3000 people in Cincinnati in 1849, died (Hedrick). This affected Harriet terrible and didn’t think that she could get over it. This was very similar to how Eliza felt when she heard that her son was going to be sold in Uncle Tom's Cabin. “She also wrote that losing Charley made her understand what a slave woman felt when her child was taken away at the auction block”(Hedrick). “When it was published in book form in March of 1852 it sold 300,000 copies in the U. S. in the first year of publication alone”(Hedrick). People in the south tried to denounce the book and said that she didn't display slavery correctly (Hedrick). The proposed that she only visited the south once for a day and she didn’t know what she was talking about (Hedrick). Everyone knew about slavery and knew how terrible it was(Hedrick). Stowe’s inspiration and reasoning on why she wrote Uncle Tom’s Cabin were inspired by the events that took place in her life. She was a social activist that stood up for what she believed. Her bravery is still noticed to this day and more people should do what Harriet Beecher Stowe did. Uncle Tom’s Cabin clearly showed the different sides of slavery and showed the world how horrible slavery was. More people need to stand up for what they believe is not right so something like slavery never happens
