In his rereading of Abbot Suger’s writings, Andreas Speer looks for connections between theology and Gothic architecture. In doing so, he breaks is argument down into four categories: liturgy, architectural descriptions in a liturgical context, light and beauty, and theology. He thoroughly examines each aspect of Suger’s writing in individual sections and comes to the conclusion that it is important to approach these texts from the perspective of a medieval monk in order to truly understand the perception and experience of a Gothic cathedral as described in Suger’s writings.
