real people and events. The story is meant to show the real life events unfold in a
new light, as well as reflect the author’s opinion on how the situation could have
been resolved or the feelings of ‘the people’ involved in the situation. In Animal
Farm, the story is set on a farm with it’s main characters ranging from animals and
humans. The farm setting represents Russia during the Russian Revolution of 1917
and the early years of the Soviet Union, when the spread of communism enforced

During a massive food shortage, the czar kept a great deal of food
for his family and court but neglected food to his people to the point of their
starvation. Much like how Jones purposely refused needed food to his animals. In
the end, the animals chased away the farmer to take control of their own home and
lives, much how the Russian people overthrew the Czar, forcing him to abdicate his
thrown, ending the reign of the czar, and the resulting execution of the royal family.
Old Major, the eldest and wisest animal on the farm, represents Karl Marx or
Vladimir Lenin. it was their vision to unite their kind, to abolish social class and to
create a world of equality. Old Major, feeling his days are coming to an end, speaks
out to the animals of Manor Farm. He tells them of what he has learned over his
many years over them, and incites them to rebel against their overlords and even
creates an anthem for them to join together in. after his death, the animals do rally
together in his memory to drive off their overlords and claim their freedom.
Snowball is so taken with his philosophy that he creates the founding

Trotsky did not break the original creed. When the animals first took over Manor
farm, he kept to Old Major’s wish and sought out to create true Animalisum, where
all animals were in fact free and equal. He refrained from sleeping in a bed like the
others, he did not partake in alcohol and he equally shared in the apples with all the
other animals. Napoleon saw that with everyone equal, then he could not rule over
them and had his dogs chase Snowball away. Had Snowball stayed, there is no way
to predict if he truly would have created an animal paradise or would have sub
come to the same temptations as Napoleon. Napoleon, another pig on the far
represents Stalin. Stalin took the original word of communism but once he had the
ear of the people he then changed the rules to meet his own needs. Napoleon took
the written rules of Animalisum and literally rewrote them to fulfill his needs.
‘Animals shall not sleep in beds’ became ‘Animals shall not sleep in beds, with
sheets’. Thus allowing Napoleon to enjoy the select comfort of the farmer’s bed,
seeming to be on the same level as the other animals, and represent the new
