Typically, homework is a majority of ones grade, so if not completed it can affect it very much. Student’s feel like they have to get it done, which calls for staying up until one in the morning. Lack of sleep is a large factor in causing stress. According to Gloria Chaika, author of “Help: Homework is Wrecking My Home Life,” she explains that, “There are others whose after-school jobs pay for car insurance and clothes or whose involvement in extracurricular activities, private lessons, or sports leaves little time for homework.” She suggests that there is simply not enough time in the day for homework. “It isn’t that the kids don’t want to do homework; the majority of my students don’t have the skills to go home and do it independently,” stated Highfield, a teacher at Florida Avenue Elementary. This statement proves that assigning too much homework to students can allow them to fall behind, especially if they don’t know how to do it.
