Archetypes are symbols used to describe a situation. For example a scapegoat is someone who takes the blame for something someone else. Scapegoats are an example of a universal symbol or archetype. The scapegoat is a universally known concept, these concepts can be seen in movies, books and literature. In the Great Gatsby, several different archetypes can be seen throughout the book.
