Helping a student use assistive technology to learn can be a tremendous challenge. Aware that students’ successful implementation of assistive technology is directly related to the knowledge, skills, and dispositions of teachers, I will work to support and more fully integrate assistive technology into the curriculum. I plan to participate in workshops and other professional development opportunities that exist in order to become familiar with the current assistive and instructional technologies so that I can embed this technology within my instruction to meet the needs of all the students. I will constantly update my skills to meet the needs of my students trough self- reflection, evaluating what has taken place in a specific situation, identifying options available and making conscious choices on how to make a difference in the future. I will study my practices and be concentrated on developing skills that help me to become more effective. On the other hand, I plan to use findings from evidence-based research to transform my practice. I am quite aware that educators tend to rely on the claims of the producers of the technologies rather than evidence-based research. It is a consequence of the little research conducted on the use of assistive technology in inclusive schools (Watson, Ito, Smith, & Andersen, 2010). Only a few researchers are conducting systematic, well-designed research that can lead to confident conclusions on how the use of assistive technology affects learning, so I will always take into account such studies to enable students to participate in high quality communication interactions and achieve their educational
