There are many reasons why spelling is important in the medical field. More specifically, being able to spell correctly as a medical assistant is a critical aspect of a medical assistant’s job. As a medical assistant, you will need to be able to spell medical conditions correctly, spell prescriptions correctly, and lastly, being able to spell medical terms displays competence, professionalism and leaves the patient feeling as if he/she is placing their health in the right hands. As a medical assistant, a patient will have a condition or serious medical concern that will need to be discussed with a provider. There are medical conditions that are similar in spelling, or sound similar and may cause confusion and errors should a spelling mistake happen. Not being able to spell or say those conditions correctly will cause confusion and will more than likely cause irritation with the provider. It is important to gather as much information about the issue from the patient to be able to correctly determine what language/spelling will be used to relay this information to the provider. Not being able to spell a condition correctly can lead to misdiagnosis of a condition and therefore lead to a provider treating the patient for the wrong medical issue.
