Raised by Krump is a documentary showed at IDFA about a dance form called Krump. The dance is originating out of Compton in southern Los Angeles County. Before Krump existed ‘clowning’ was an often performed dance movement in the black community. Clown dancers would perform at birthday parties or entertain a general public. Krumping was born when the ‘clowns’ got tired of putting up a happy face all the time. They wanted to express their daily feelings and struggles of growing up in such a discouraging neighbourhood.
The documentary displays how krumping gave these children in Compton an achievable future. Krumping stopped them from getting into crimes or getting depressed. It helps them as a therapy and gives them inner peace. If they are really good krumping could even become their profession. This is not a good environment to grow up in. Krumping prevents those young black men and woman from Crampton to stay out of criminal activities. In the documentary a boy talked about his friends who have guns and sell drugs because they do not have another way to make money. He asked his friends to show him how to use a gun but they refused. His friends told him “No, because you can do something we can’t. You do not need crimes because you have a future. You dance.” So basically because the boy can dance his friends forbid him to get into crimes. More people like him could have Krump to stop them from going down the wrong path it helps them create a better future. Because who would ever hire someone who owns a gun or sells drugs. This is why krumping helps children in bad neighbourhoods like Crompton to still have a chance at a successful
