Play therapy connects to an understanding of the socio-dramatic and pretend play that shapes the early conceptual and emotional development of children. In particular, it involves a heavy focus on behavioural strategies that distract a child from the negative aspects of their life. CACPT also provides workshops that address ethical decision making, sexually abused children, children with behaviour problems or anxiety, and helping a child cope with a loss in their family. Students who take the available courses, attend the workshops on child development, and complete a certain amount of clinical supervision and practice hours will graduate from the CACPT program and become a Play Therapist. The play therapy approach that is the focus of the CACPT website relates strongly to the idea of socio-dramatic play in children and how it can be helpful for children who are not socially competent. The website includes workshops that offer storytelling, puppetry, and creative activities that may be beneficial for a child to gain an understanding of social norms and how to behave in specific situations. For a child who is going through a difficult time, these workshops can also provide a way for parents and children to interact with others that are facing the same obstacles. Behavioral strategies are used by younger children while cognitive strategies are adopted later on.
