" Freedom of speech was guaranteed to us 231 years ago in the first ten amendments of a document written by James Madison. This first simple freedom is something that set our country apart. Since then many court verdicts and congressional bills have been overturned based on a violation of the first amendment being argued. The question of where the line of freedom of speech and censorship on the internet is blurry. The decision of at what point the government should intervene can be difficult to make. It often brings concerns of the government, and more specifically Homeland Security, being either too strict or not strict enough. If the interventions become to strict and too often it will come off as censorship. If the interventions are not often enough or are not addressed with issues that should be dealt with, it comes off as the government not caring about that aspect of national security. There needs to be a middle ground. The public needs to feel like their privacy is being respected, but they also need to feel safe and protected against the threat of violence. Almost every student has access to and is likely even given an electronic device with internet access by the school. The school needs to to keep it what the students see safe and appropriate. The problem is the firewalls that often block websites needed by older kids for research and homework purposes. Excessive internet monitoring is okay and possibly even needed at this level of government. That still leaves the question; when does monitoring and intervention become
