It was brightly colored in red and blue. Children had to take regular gas drills at school. They found these drills hard to take seriously, especially when they discovered blowing through the rubber made 'rude' noises.
The children's education had been severely disrupted during WWII. One in five of the country’s schools were damaged by bombing and many others were requisitioned by the government. Children were crammed into large classes and stationery and books were often in short supply. After the war, a significant number of children failed to reach the required levels of literacy and numeracy.
The Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts were the two most important organizations. They were very active during the War. Scouts begin campaign selling Defense Bonds and Stamps and sponsored a variety of scrap drives. The most important were for newspapers, scrap metal including tin cans, and old tires. Girl Scouts was a separate organization from the Boy Scouts of America. Girl Scouts collected silk stockings. Silk was needed for parachutes and before the War, Japan had been a major supplier of silk to America. They sponsored programs in flag etiquette, first aid, and nutrition during the
