Through the course of the Chromatography lab, the question trying to be answered was “do Skittles™ and M&M’s™ use the same dye for red candies?” The reason for conducting this experiment is to find out whether or not the two brands of candies use the same dye. The hypothesis derived from this question is if the two candies are made with the same dye, then each lane of dye and solvent will travel the same distance because the dyes are the same size and polarity. The dependent variable of the distance the dye and solvent traveled was measured using a ruler measuring in centimeters while the independent variable of candies was changed.
