The organization needs to be able to survive, especially how competitive the market is today. Therefore strategic planning and management is a must. As a CIO, you must be able to think and plan strategically. Another important but yet challenging function for the CIO are to be able to successfully align IT with the organization’s needs. The CIO must determine what IT products are best for the organization. But foremost, in order for the CIO to be able to incorporate IT into the organization’s strategic plan, the organization must have a good strategic plan to start with. One place to start in strategic planning is by knowing what the mission is. A good mission statement usually identifies why the organization is in business or why it exists. It mainly consists of the organization’s name, tells what service or product you are offering, identify the customers, and its source of competitive advantage. Then there is the vision statement that usually tells the story of where you are trying to go. It is more goal-orientated. The mission and vision statements assist the CIO tremendous when they are trying to align IT with the business strategy. It helps the CIO identify what it is that the business is trying to go as well as what the business needs are. A CIO who cannot think and plan strategically may experience problems while trying to help his/her organization plan for
