As a small child, I always wondered, “What do I want to be when I grow up?”. The possibilities swirled around in my head as I watched cops chase the bad guys, fishermen bring in the “world’s deadliest catch”, and scientists mixing colorful solutions in clear glass beakers. Having a job and becoming an adult always seemed like something far-off and fictional. As I grew older, I knew that I would have to choose my future career, but it seemed that my future career chose me.
At eleven years old, I was admitted into a hospital for surgery on my upper back. Naturally, I was nervous, maybe even slightly fearful of my first surgery. Would it be painful? How long would it take? Would my back look different? All of my questions were soon answered by my caring and compassionate nurse. She did such an amazing job of comforting me in a time of uncertainty. Even after the operation, her words and actions made a lasting impression on me. As I reflected upon different career choices, I gravitated towards the medical field. However, I had very little interest in being a doctor or surgeon. I felt a strong desire to become a nurse.

I took my first “Intro to Healthcare” class and instantly fell in love with it. It was interesting to learn all the medical terms and procedures when caring for a patient. I also found it encouraging that most of my classmates were passionate and caring individuals. These same classmates encouraged me to join HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America).
