Colon polyps can best be described as a clump of cells that are attached to the lining of the colon. This can cause a number of symptoms to the victim such as blood in one’s stool, rectal bleeding, and diarrhea or constipation for over a course of a week. (mayoclinet.org) this strain of polyps is so common that by the average time an adult has reached the age of 60 there is a 25% chance that that person would had acquired this strain of polyps. (ASG.org) There are numerous factors that are believed to affect one’s risk of acquiring this disease such as diet, age, level of activity, and smoking habits. Side effects only show their heads when the polyp become large due to the multitude of cells being packed onto one another. The large sized polyps can cause some very uncomfortable symptoms including bleeding of the polyp and can exhibit the secondary effect by revealing blood in the victim’s stool. Polyp bleeding can cause other effects such as one feeling fatigued and experiencing feelings of muscle weakness. ( http://www.drugs.com/health-guide/colon-polyps.html) In order to avoid these disastrous outcomes one should go through a variety of tests by a doctor in order to achieve a correct diagnosis. There are a great deal of ways that one can be properly diagnosed, these would include a digital rectal exam, a fecal occult blood test, and a colonoscopy. In a digital rectal exam a physician would insert his finger into the rectum in order to feel and find unusual growths that indicate the presence of colon polyps. Another test would the fecal occult blood test where a physician would take a sample of the patient’s stool and examine the matter for any presence of blood which would indicate the presence of a large bleeding polyp. Lastly, the colonoscopy is done and is done through a long tube like object being injected through the anus that will allow the practitioner to see the colon and look for any abnormalities on the colon.
