When one thinks about slavery they think about something that doesn’t exist anymore because it ended in 1865, right? Not exactly. A more modernized type of slavery is sex and labor slavery, which is a type of human trafficking. Human trafficking is ‘the illegal movement of people, typically for the purposes of forced labor or commercial sexual exploitation’ according to National Human Trafficking Resource Center. Although you might think this is just a problem in third world countries, you are wrong. It’s a problem in the United States just as much as it is in other countries. “It is estimated that 14,500 to 17,500 people, primarily women and children, are trafficked to the U.S. annually.” The United States just does a better job at hiding it. If we don’t talk about it or bring attention to it, than it will never go away.

Commercial sex is when any person involved is given or receives something of value. Sometimes it can be hard to distinguish sex trafficking from other forms of commercial sex but they have come up with the A-M-P Model, which stands for Action, Means, and Purpose. If a situation meets the criteria of all three parts, then it is defined as human trafficking.
