Comparing Lion King And Hamlet

In both classic works, Disney’s The Lion King and Shakespeare’s Hamlet we see stark similarities and differences. The similarities are evident in the family structures, relationships, deaths, apparitions, maturations, as well as their physical and moral struggles. The differences can be seen in other things such as our characters ages, the general mood of the story, the deaths of more characters in hamlet, the moral guidance that simba receives and of course the species of the characters. The family structure in the lion king is similar because we see a royal family wherein the son is the prince and the father is the king. The uncle is a jealous man (lion) that wants to usurp the throne. The way the uncle goes about usurping the throne is the same even. In the lion king Simba fights with Scar who is ultimately killed by the Hyenas. In Hamlet we see Hamlet kill his uncle with a sword and poisoned wine. Although their motives for fighting are different, pride and belonging vs vengeance both princes do assume command of their own fate and do what they must do. This is where we see one of our most interesting similarities both princes must overcome a moral dilemma. Simba must decide to actually confront his uncle and stop fleeing the past, he must regain the pride that he once lost. In Hamlet the prince must decide if he should or should not kill his uncle and ultimately himself. Although we do see a large amount of similarities we also see differences, one of the bigger differences is that the film is generally a much happier story than the play. In the film we see a distraught Simba find the aforementioned duo Timon and Pumba and live a generally happy life for a long period of time, basically through all of his adolescents.
