One of the most successful comedies of the early 1950’s television was the I Love Lucy television series. The Korean War was at its peak during the premiere of I Love Lucy, but the television series did not reflect negatively or political views within its episodes of the warfare that was occurring miles away. About ten years after I Love Lucy aired, and during the golden era of television came The Andy Griffith Show television series. In both TV series the main characters of I Love Lucy: Ricky, Lucy, Fred and Ethel Mertz (Ricky & Lucy’s neighbors) and The Andy Griffith Show: Andy, Barney, Opie and Aunt Bea are well dressed. Within the episodes, the males wear ironed button up collared tops or uniforms with pressed slacks and the female wear modest dresses of that era with fashionable accessories. Some differences between the Ricardo’s and Taylor’s are the family structure. The Ricardo’s are a multiracial family, with Ricky being of Latino decent and wife, Lucy of European/Caucasian decent; with no children in episodes viewed. The Taylor’s are a Caucasian family with a single father, Andy, who remains to be solo while raising his young son, Opie with the help of Aunt Bea. Another difference between the main characters of I Love Lucy and The Andy Griffith Show is the characters speech and grammar. With I Love Lucy, Lucy and the Mertz speak proper English for their geographical area of a modern city setting. While in The Andy Griffith show Andy, Opie, Barney and Aunt Bea spoke with a “southern twang” full of grammar errors; but is not uncommon for the geographical area of the mountain area of small town
