Often in Literature, including those of the Historical Fiction genre, the hero is usually depicted as a gallant knight in shining armour or a king with powers of epic proportion. However, in Geoffrey Trease’s “Cue for Treason” it was a pleasant surprise to see the hero was in fact, the heroine Katherine Russel better known as Kit. Katherine Russel epitomizes a superb heroine because of her fearlessness, persistence and above all intelligence. Katherine’s fearlessness contributed to portraying her as the formidable heroine. From her very introduction, her lack of fear was apparent when she ran away from home and joined theatre disguised as a male. This was during an era when women were not allowed to participate in such jobs. It was an act of fearlessness because she was aware that if caught, the penalty was death. Eventually, her fearlessness led her to join the queen’s secret service alongside Peter, the other protagonist. Her mental drive was crucial in the development of herself as a heroine. Kit was a very skilled actor and although she played a very integral part in the theatre, she was willing to quit if Peter was not allowed to stay, because he needed the job. So she persisted, thus retaining him within the story. Another instance of her persistence was when she insisted on joining the secret service. It is where she proved to be instrumental in exposing the conspirators’ plot to assassinate the queen. It was her persistence that would ultimately save the lives of her friend and the
