Cultural humility should be practice regardless of sexual preferences and identification. As a healthcare professional, it is my job and responsibility to treat and interact with my patients in a respectful and dignified way regardless of what gender they have chosen to represent themselves as. I never really had much experience interacting with LGBTQ individuals until I started nursing school. My first LGBTQ patient was a transgender woman. During change of shift report, no one told me she was a transgender and what her preferred name was. I walked into her room and called her by the name on her chart cart. She never corrected me.
