As the Chief/Sheriff, when deciding to remove the D.A.R. E. program in my area, I would start by considering the possibility of replacing it with the Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) program. The BBBS program offers a one-to-one mentoring in a community setting that assists at-risk youth between the age of six and eighteen and has been shown to significantly reduce initiating drug and alcohol use as well as antisocial behavior (Program Profile: Big Brothers Big Sisters, 2011). Most of the mentors are adults from twenty-two to forty-nine years old.

The BBBS focuses on communities that are facing hardships as well as single-parent households and low-income neighborhoods. The program targets youth that are in a high risk of exposure to violence and other problematic situations at home and in the community (Program Profile: Big Brothers Big Sisters, 2011).

The adults used in the program play a critical part in mentoring with the youth on a regular basis and in a positive relationship. There is a one-to-one mentoring between the Big Brother or Big Sister and Little Brother or Little Sister in a community setting. (Program Profile: Big Brothers Big Sisters, 2011). One of the goals of the program is for the mentor to spend more time with the mentee, which will allow a mutual relationship to form.
