In my essay I chose to use the "so it goes" quotes to explain my perspective on the book because since the phrase is used so many times in the book I feel like it could have multiple meanings and has a lot of significance in this book. Billy is stating that he is starting to think like the Tralfamadorians, because he is not going to look back anymore and doesn’t want to be that “pillar of salt.” So when he sees someone dead or dying, which happens frequently in this book, he just says “so it goes” and moves on because basically there is nothing he can do about it. Death is apart of life, no matter how severe or minor the death is. “The Germans carried the corpse out. The corpse was Wild Bob. So it goes.” The Germans made Weary give back his boots given to him by the German army for a pair of clogs, to cause gangrene and kill him.
