When was the last time you did something outstanding? What did you do? Did you help a cat climb down from a tree? Or maybe you pushed an old woman out of the path of a speeding car? Whatever you did, it was certainly a heroic act. You have probably heard the saying “Everyone can be a hero!” But are those words true? In a philosophical sense, yes. In a material sense, no. Do not take this the wrong way, but I would rather label a firefighter who just rescued a baby from a burning apartment building a hero than a person who helped someone with a broken leg get up. Both people have done something great, and we should all follow their examples. But to be a real hero, you must possess three things: strength of heart, determination, and courage. In case you have forgotten, let me remind you. Strength of heart, determination, and courage are what you need to be a hero. But you also need extraordinariness and wits. Most people today are filled with thoughts of themselves more than others, causing their hearts to be weak. They give up when the going gets tough, lacking determination. And they are too afraid of failure or embarrassment, killing courage. Nor do they think things through as they should, not using their wits. By doing all these things, they are ordinary people who are nothing more than a speck of dust in the aging ways of the world. To be a hero, first you think of others in a loving way, flexing your heart muscles (your spiritual and emotional heart, not the thing that goes thump, thump against your chest). Then you must decide what you are going to do and that you will do it with determination. Now you have to use your old noggin to think of a solution to the problem. And with courage you must actually do something. Then and only then have you been transformed from dust in the background to beauty that stands out from the crowd, in a good
