There was a shadow. A shadow lingering nearby in the dense, dark forest. John followed it for a while. It darted in and out through the trees until it stopped directly across where they were sitting. He stared at it for a while until Rob and James traced where his eyes lay in horror. Instantly, James started yelling and Rob quickly grasped for his gun. John placed his hand on the gun to cease-fire. He couldn’t let him do it. “What? Are you crazy? Do you want us to get killed?” he yelled. John watched as the shadow emerged to be a young Vietnamese boy. A young boy who was probably sent by the enemy to distract so they could attack. The boy looked at Rob, then James, then John. He looked like he was on the brink of tears and god help him… John felt sorry for him. This wasn’t his fight. He didn’t know what to do. He was clueless. Suddenly, he screeched to the grey skies. Two gunshots rang out and John fell to his knees.

A white bright light shone in his eyes. White walls and tubes surrounded him, he was in the hospital. He had survived. A nurse scurried into the room and smiled, “Oh!! You’re awake!! You died for a few minutes in combat but you were able to be lifted on a chopper and sent here…we revived you and here you are.” John was startled. He had died but he’d survived. He sat up and listened to the smooth, soul music, bopping up and down to every song The Sapphires sung, “I said if you want me, want me, all you gotta do is send for me. Don’t wait too long, just to pick up your phone and I’m coming home, where I belong.” The song reminded him of the hardships he endured during the war. John smiled. He smiled because he had survived.
