Irony in a Play Oedipus the King is a play about a baby named Oedipus, who is left to die in a field because of a prophecy. The prophecy was said to be Oedipus will grow up and one day murder his father and marry his mother. Which does happen but Oedipus does not know till the end. In the play there is dramatic irony, situational irony, and tragic irony, they are all represented in this play. Dramatic irony is irony that is inherent in speeches or a situation of a drama and is understood by the audience but not by the characters in the play. One situation in the play is when Oedipus cuts his eyes out; the audience does not expect that to happen. Oedipus’s whole story is a situation how he is adopted, and runs away because of the prophecy. Then how he murders a man who just happens to be his father, then marries his mother. Tragic irony is a form of dramatic irony, the audience is aware that a characters words or actions will bring tragic results. When Oedipus leaves his adopted home and ends up in Thebes where he was born is a form of tragic irony. Also Oedipus ends up murdering his own father anyway, and ends up marrying his mother and, having kids with her, despite running away from the prophecy. Then Oedipus’s wife and mother end up killing herself because of the prophecy was true. Oedipus the King a play filled with drama, situations, and tragedy. Oedipus runs away worried about a prophecy, that one day he will murder his father and marry his mother, which comes true in the end. Oedipus the King was a blind king, who was selfish and didn’t want to believe the truth, but the prophecy turned out to be true even though he ran away, that’s
