The cotton gin was made to easily remove the seeds from cotton, a process that normally took a long amount of time. With the invention of the cotton gin, cotton was made faster and became affordable. "The cotton gin also increased cotton production, the need for slaves, the price of slaves, and the value of the cotton crop." (Doc.2) Though there was a reduction in labor efforts needed to remove seeds, more slaves were needed to pluck cotton from the farm. The demand for land to grow more crops and slave labor also increased. "In 1790 there were six slave states; in 1860 there were 15."
