The effect of low pH on Enzyme Activity

Introduction

What are Enzymes? Enzymes are proteins that control the speed of reaction in our body. They help in speeding up metabolic reaction in our bodies. If enzymes were absent, the speed of these metabolic reactions would be so slow that they would not be able to produce the required energy to keep us alive. Other functions of enzymes are to help cells to communicate with each other, keeping cell growth, life and death under control. On the other hand, acids are chemical substances which neutralize alkalis, are capable of dissolving some metals and turn litmus paper red and are sour in tasted. Enzymes have their own optimal pH level to which they act (Bender, 2012). Many of the enzymes and proteins

0.05 grams of yeast were added to the balloon and tighten using the rubber band making sure that no gases escaped.
7. Observations and measurements were made and recorded in chart.
8. Steps 5 and 6 were repeated using with equipment 1b.
9. All measurements were recorded after 1 minute, 3 minutes, 5 minutes, and at the end of the experiment.
10. Another 5 milliliters of hydrogen peroxide were obtain and added to beaker 2a.
11. To beaker 2a. equal amounts of 100% vinegar were added and the solution was shaken to ensure that they were mix properly.
12. Content of beaker 2a. were then pour into balloon 2a. and 0.05 gm of yeast got added to the balloon.
13. The mouth of the balloon was tight to ensure gases did not escape.
14. Steps 11 to 14 were repeated using the second set of beakers and balloons and observations recorded in the data chart.
15. The experiment was repeated using the third set of beakers and balloons, but this time using 80% vinegar and all data was recorded on the data chart.
16. The fourth set was then used, but this time using 60% vinegar and all data recorded in the data chart.
17. The test was conducted twice to make sure of accuracy.
18. In all the tests, the litmus paper was used to check the acidity of the
