In cancer patients, is the use of complementary and alternative therapies (CAT) in conjunction with opioid analgesics for pain, more effective than the use of opioids alone?
Background
Patients living with cancer are subject to a diminished quality of life due to the complications associated with cancer and the side effects of treatment. Patients diagnosed with cancer combat obstacles, such as, physical distress, worry, exhaustion, emotional suffering and constant pain. For this reason, it’s vital to find and include other forms of treatment or alternative approaches in conjunction with the standard treatments for cancer. It teaches a person to control particular body functions by helping a patient alter his or her heart rate, skin temperature, breathing rate, muscle tension and other such bodily activity. Biofeedback can decrease stress and muscle stiffness from a number of causes but biofeedback is not intended to replace medical treatment (Ku and Koo 2012). Despite limited evidence, being a newer treatment option, Biofeedback is a safe approach that does not interfere with traditional interventions. Biofeedback appears to be an appropriate therapy to improve quality of life for cancer patients.
Conclusion
Although several of the studies reviewed noted many limitations and showed there is need for additional research, there is solid evidence indicating that the use of CATs are being successful implemented into the treatment plans; and are improving the quality of life for many cancer patients. Whether the use is for pain, stress, anxiety, disturbed sleeping pattern, depression that are associated with cancer, patient specific CATs can be beneficial.
