The spread of Christianity brought the church into contact with Classical learning and literature. As a result, the church was forced to examine the relationship between philosophy and Divine Revelation. Referring to pagan philosophy as “Egyptian gold,” Augustine recalls God’s command to the Israelites to repurpose the gold idols of Egypt (pg.325). He voices that Christians should make use of the teachings of the Greek philosophers, especially Plato. The reason of philosophy may better glorify God. Likewise, Clement of Alexandria declares, “Before the advent of the Lord, philosophy was necessary to the Greeks for righteousness” (pg.323). Philosophy, therefore, was a preparation, paving the way for him who is perfected in Christ.
