A key component of the American mindset is Americentrism, also known as “the idea or perceived bias to judge other cultures and nations by American standards or to center around the United States in news” (“Americentrism”). This concept causes Americans to react differently when hearing about different countries through media or talk. Immediately, everything we hear is through the American lense. Therefore,when an American citizen is receiving information about other countries, they will compare them immediately to American life and culture. For example, Americans are much more likely to react poorly to unfamiliar traditions, like foot binding or neck rings, because it is not ordinary to them. Even though the traditions have been practiced for thousands of years, Americans are still unaccustomed and unsupportive.
