Betrayal: to hurt someone who trusts you by not giving help or by doing something wrong. Amir, the main character, performs an act of betrayal which leads to his never ending guilt and unrepaired relationships. In The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, Amir's act of betrayal influences his adoption of Sohrab, his half-brother's son, his ceaseless regret and guilt, and losing himself and his half-brother.
Hassan, Amir's friend and brother, always showed his loyalty to Amir. One day in Afghanistan, Hassan ran Amir's kite during a kite flying contest and ended up in a lonely lonely. As Amir goes to look for Hassan and his kite, he witnesses his innocent friend being pinned down, raped, and tormented. Instead of assisting his helpless companion, he runs away out of fear and selfishness. Amir never knew this one moment would bring his life down with contriteness for the rest of his life. From the moment he betrayed his childhood friend, his life seemed to crash into a downwards spiral. Even after Amir moves across the world, gets married, and moves on with his life, his sinful act still catches up with him. This creates a man vs self and man vs man conflict for the forever ashamed man. This act serves as the climax for the novel and results in the separation of two childhood friends. The act reveals his character by portraying Amir's selfish ways and weakness to face Hassan. On the other hand, Hassan continues to display his noble and ethical characteristics by expressing his allegiance after a scarring rape incident. After the betrayal, the friends take their own path and nothing is ever the same.
