Why Was Charles Town Difficult to Settle? Settlers looked all over for the perfect place to settle upon. Charles Town just happened to be that perfect place because of it’s rich soil for cash crops, for example indigo and rice, and easy ocean access for trading. Charles Town was a small settlement founded at Albemarle Point on the Ashley River in 1670 but wouldn’t be in the location for long. The Spanish had their eyes on Charles Town and did not like the British taking the area so they fired several unsuccessful attacks on Charles Town. Around 1680 the Spanish stopped threatening Charles Town and that’s when Charles Town was relocated to Oyster Point, which is known as today, Charleston. Charles Town was difficult to settle in for many reasons. A couple of reasons why Charles Town was difficult to settle is because the Spanish encountered many obstacles there including unfavorable weather, sickness and diseases, low food supplies, map making and hostility from the natives while trying to settle in South Carolina. Geography made it difficult for people to settle in Charles Town because the maps were not as accurate as they could be due to low technology, so it was hard to find the exact location of some places. Resources also made it difficult for people to settle in Charles Town because the pasturage was too high so the soil was more clay like then it should have been which made it difficult to plant crops and many people wanted more resources but could not get them due to the high pasturage. Disease was another reason that Charles Town was difficult to settle in because it affected the settlement of Charles Town due to too many people getting sick with the disease smallpox which ended many businesses and lowered the economy’s income.
