Human behaviors and miscommunications may have been contributing factors in Jack’s disconnected attitude toward his wife and daughters. Jack comes from a family where emotions were not displayed healthily. Although Jack’s mother and father had a close relationship, his father’s drinking caused him to become very hostile towards his mother. He was verbally abusive and would degrade her. When sober, he would cry and beg for her forgiveness promising her he would never hurt her again. Jack said it was a vicious cycle between the two of them. Jack resented his father for the emotional abuse he endured throughout his childhood. He blamed his father for his mother’s suicide. Jill describes her family as very close. Jill feels she grew up in a healthy family environment where everyone was close. Her parents had a very loving relationship, and Jill says that she always envied the type of bond her parents had with one another. Her father was a hard worker and provided well for the family. However, her younger brother’s tragic car accident in high school left her family devastated. Jill said she felt that the sudden loss affected her father greatly, and he started to withdraw from her older brother. It was not until the father’s diagnosis of lung cancer that they began to connect again. Jill has always had a close relationship with her mother and remained very close to her brother and his family until Jack lost his job. Jill’s brother is upset with Jack’s behavior and the way he treated Jill’s mother during a time when they needed her the most. Her brother is also distraught that they are residing in a homeless sheltering program. He refuses to see Jill until Jack gets help. Jack’s behavior since the loss of his job is very unlike him. Jill is concerned for him, her daughters, and her
