When an individual steps on a sharp object, the flexor withdrawal reflex causes the muscle to contract and remove the stimulated limb from the source of pain. This withdrawal reflex includes a polysynaptic reflex arc, and the usage of sensory, motor, and interneurons. When a receptor on the foot is stimulated by the sharp object, sensory neurons holding the pain information send the impulses to the spinal cord and brand expansively. Here, the interneurons are activated and the impulses are transmitted to the motor neurons, causing the stimulation of the flexor muscles and inhibition of the extensor muscles, for the affected leg. Consequently, the flexor muscles contract, and the extensor muscles relax in response to the stimulus, allowing withdrawal
