Under the Family Medical Leave Act of 1993, employees can request unpaid sick leave for medical reasons but must have worked a minimum of 12 months before he or she may qualify. In this proposal, it will discuss the Family Medical Leave program, who qualifies for the program, and the impact and issues of unpaid leave. The proposal will also cover what countries have paid leave, and what is the United States can do to improve the program.

It is a shame that the United States of America is the only country that does not have paid family medical leave for their working-class citizens and military personal. The Department of Health and Human Services should revise health insurance premiums to include the small portion for family medical leave. Since health insurance is mandatory to request leave, why not deduct a portion from it to cover paid leave. The funding should cover the three states that currently have paid leave and the forty-seven states that does not offer unpaid leave. Paid family medical leave should matter. At one point or another people will need family medical leave for maternity leave, serious illnesses, and/or taking care of a family member with chronic health conditions.

Everyone could become eligible for paid leave if small deductions are deducted from health insurance premiums. Other countries use social security to fund their paid leave. When compared to other countries, we are at the bottom of the chart when it comes to providing paid leave. Estonia ranks the highest of the nations by offering more than a year and a half of paid leave to new parents. Only 31 out of 41 countries provide new fathers at least two weeks of paid leave, the U.S.is not one of them. Out of 41 countries, the U.S. does not have mandated laws to cover paid leave so the working class to return to work before properly healing because they cannot afford to be on unpaid leave because of monthly obligations or unexpected reasons, like not able to return to work. Unlike other countries, we are supposed to be the land of better opportunity, but we lack the opportunity support employees that may need family medical leave. Americans need to take a stand and make their voices heard on the current FMLA regulations. We can start surveying the benefits and impacts of family medical leave. Then let our voices be heard, go to board meetings and argue why the leave is needed, so the change be introduced at the polls. Once the change is voted into the new regulation, research funding
