The Genetic Neural Sonar was created by neuroscientists at the University of Maryland to map inherited gene based abnormalities in brain structure and chemistry. The proposed GNS can determine if an individual brain has the kind of abnormal genetic structures that scientists, such as Dr. Starkweather, believe are responsible for predisposing people to commit violent crime. The scientists believe that those who possess this type of brain structure may have a significantly greater chance of one day becoming a chronic violent offender or engage in outbursts of mass murder than members of the general population.
