Definition: The purpose of the scale is to identify the problems a person’s hearing loss may be causing him/her.
Development: Questions from the gerontology literature were reviewed and over 50 items were relevant. A psychometric analysis of the questions was done and a full version of the HHIE was developed.
Description: HHIE (Weinstein, Spitzer, & Ventry, 1986) is a 25-item scale with two subscales: social function (12 items) and emotional function (13 items). Participants respond yes (4 points), sometimes (2 points) or no (0 points) to each statement; thus, scores can range from 0 to 100. The goal of the HHIE is to measure the perceived effects of hearing loss.

The Hearing Handicap Inventory for Adults or HHIA (Newman, Weinstein, Jacobson, & Hug, 1990) is a slight modification of the Hearing Handicap Inventory for the Elderly; three items are modified and focus on the workplace. The number of questions and scoring is the same as the HHIE. It is used for adults below 65 years of age.
The HHIA was designed to both quantify handicap and also assess benefit by measuring change in perceived handicap after the fitting of hearing aids.
They both have 10-item screening versions. Use.
1.They are major indices of self-report of outcome and satisfaction. They place an added emphasis on the patient's point of view and measure the real-world benefit and satisfaction of hearing aid use.
2. They Help quantify the true impact hearing loss and its impact on activity limitations, lifestyles, etc.3. Finally, an evidence-based practice paradigm requires clinicians to demonstrate that their hearing aid fittings are providing benefit in real-world conditions. For this reason, their outcomes are the new "gold standard" for measuring and reporting
