PAINT TWP. — Size, structure, weather and communications all were hurdles over which firefighters were forced to jump in battling a Tuesday evening blaze that ripped through a local sawmill.
They were called to Winesburg Hardwood and Pallet, located at 2871 U.S. Route 62, at 6:20 after a truck driver unloading logs in the yard smelled smoke, according to Paint Township Volunteer Fire Department Chief Dennis Scheufler. The business is owned by Robert Coblentz.
The witness said he looked toward the sawmill building and went closer to inspect after seeing smoke in the area of a chip pile, located outside the building and under an awning. In the roof, he said he noticed a lot of smoke and he then saw “little pockets of sawdust burning” on the top

And as they battled the blaze, mounting both an exterior and interior attack, it continued to make its way across the ceiling, spreading into different sections of the building, which had been added over time, making it “tough for us to get to.”
It took firefighters between 1 ½ and two hours to control the fire, which was contained to the steel-sided sawmill building, in which employees also make pallets, said Scheufler.
They remained on scene for about 6 ½ hours in an attempt to fully extinguish all hot spots, he said, explaining, “(The fire) was tough to get to with the ceiling coming down and we couldn't get in some of the overhead doors.”
Eventually they used a track hoe to tear down the walls and get to the fire and the machinery on the floor of the building, said Scheufler, noting that while the structure appears to be a total loss, because the fire kept to the roof, he believes some of the equipment may be
